NASA’s recent discoveries and ongoing research have significantly contributed to the mission of making Mars habitable for humans. The findings of the Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE) conducted by NASA have been particularly noteworthy. The experiment has been successful in generating oxygen on Mars and even producing enough to sustain a small dog for 10 hours. This could be a crucial breakthrough in providing a sustainable source of oxygen for future human missions to Mars.
Apart from this, NASA is also exploring the possibility of finding water resources on Mars. Recently, they discovered an ancient water ripple formed within the lakes on the planet, which could serve as a potential water source for human life. If more water resources can be found, it could be a significant step in ensuring the survival of humans on the planet.
Mars has several advantages that make it a potential new home for humans. Its day-night cycle and temperature range are similar to Earth’s. Mars’ thin atmosphere makes it easier to establish a sustainable one for human habitation. These factors suggest that the planet could be habitable and can become a future human colonization.
FA students have differing opinions on this possibility. Cecilia (‘27) says, “People can live on Mars in the future because NASA has been exploring to seek life on Mars. There are some traces of life on Mars, and more yet to be discovered.” Raphi (‘27) states, “Hopefully people could live on Mars, as long as Elon Musk doesn’t give up!” Aidan (‘27) adds, “It’s a long time for people to live on Mars. I would say yes, though it would be a long time in the future.”
NASA’s recent discoveries and ongoing research could pave the way for humans to live on Mars in the future. If more water resources can be found and if the atmosphere is made more suitable for humans, it could be possible for people to establish a new home on Mars. With continued research and development, the day may come when humans can colonize Mars and make it a new home. The possibility of colonizing Mars is very exciting, and it can open up new doors for humans to explore the unknown. Mars could potentially be the second, better planet and probably a new start for human society.
