November was National Men’s Health Awareness Month. This is an important time for men across the world as it increases visibility and awareness around the unique mental health issues that men may encounter. For example, men are often faced with societal pressures and expectations surrounding masculinity, which continue to enforce the idea that mental health struggles such as depression and anxiety should be viewed as signs of weakness in men. Due to societal norms that discourage vulnerability, men are less likely to seek help. Men’s Health Awareness Month aims to combat this by providing men with important tools and knowledge regarding their mental health.
Throughout November, articles, brochures, pamphlets, and other educational materials relating to men’s mental health are made more prevalent and readily available. These resources encourage men to recognize the importance of their mental wellbeing, and remind them that they can always seek help around them. They also inform men about common symptoms of mental health issues, risk factors, and different preventative measures and coping mechanisms.
Men’s Health Awareness Month also provides men with a special platform to voice their issues and concerns. According to the Indiana University School of Medicine, 31% of men suffer from depression in their lifetime, however only a quarter of that percent talk to mental health professionals and only a third take medication. During Men’s Health Awareness Month, men are encouraged and applauded for speaking up about their struggles with mental health, setting off a chain reaction. As more men speak up about their issues and are welcomed with warmth and support, others feel empowered to pursue avenues for better help.
