Recently, the Los Angeles Dodgers have made headlines by spending around 1.2 billion dollars on Free Agents. Most notably, they signed Shohei Ohtani to a 700 million dollar contract and Yoshinobu Yamamoto to a 325 million dollar contract. Ohtani’s contract is of particular interest not only because it is the largest contract in western sports history, but because he will only receive 20 million over the next 10 years. Ohtani has elected to receive the 680 million when he is no longer obligated, after he finishes his 10 years of playing for The Dodgers. Ohtani is deferring the money so that he can move out of California or even out of the US when he is done paying so that he will have less payments for state taxes. According to the California Center for Jobs and the Economy, the state of California could lose an estimated 98 million if Ohtani moves out of state in ten years.
Regardless of Ohtani’s personal antics, he is a legendary player who will greatly aid an already phenomenal baseball roster. The Dodgers had the third best record in baseball last year, with 100 wins and only 62 loses. They have kept all of their notable players from last season but have also added Ohtani, Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow, Teoscar Hernandez. Simply put, it would be an utter embarrassment for the Dodgers to lose the World Series this year. The players are sensational. Ohtani is a baseball phenomenon, winning two Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards in the last 3 years. Yamamoto is regarded as the best pitcher from the Japanese Leagues, and the Japanese Leagues also happen to produce other star athletes on The Dodgers like Ohtani and Kodai Senga. Other players have been recipients of numerous accolades and awards, like Glasnow, who received a Cy Young award. Also, Hernandez has proved to be a legendary producer as well as an all-star athlete. The Dodgers postseason has been very interesting, and fully encompasses a baseball dream team.
