This past Major League Baseball (MLB) season was very exciting. Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers became the first player ever to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases. Eclipsing Othani’s great regular season was Aaron Judge’s campaign. Judge posted a 1.159 on base plus slugging percentage (OPS). The last player to have a higher OPS than Judge in a regular season and not be on PEDs (performance enhancing drugs) was Mickey Mantle in 1956. Furthermore, Judge led both the National League (NL) and the American League (AL) in home runs, runs batted in, walks, on base percentage, and slugging percentage. The Yankees were the first team in baseball to clinch a playoff spot. The Orioles, Guardians, Royals, Tigers, and Astros also secured a playoffs position in the AL. As for the NL, the Dodgers, Brewers, and Padres all made the playoffs. The final two teams who made it to the postseason were determined on September 30th in a nail biting double header between the Mets and the Braves. Before these two games, three NL teams could still have made the playoffs: The Diamondbacks, the Mets, and the Braves. The Diamondbacks had a record of 89-73; while the Mets and Braves both were 88-72. If one team swept the other, then the team who won both games would make the playoffs along with the Diamondbacks. However, If both teams won one game then both of those teams would make the playoffs, even though the Diamondbacks would have the same record as the Braves and Mets. The Diamondbacks did not have a favorable record when playing either the Mets or Braves this season. In turn, to settle the tiebreaker, the Mets and the Braves would make the playoffs. In actuality, this situation would play out. The Mets won the first game of the double header and the Braves won the second, so both of those teams made the playoffs. With the excitement of this regular baseball season, baseball fans have a lot to look forward to with the upcoming MLB postseason.
