Few teams in the NFL have more superstar players than the Dallas Cowboys. Dak Prescott at quarterback, Ceedee Lamb as wide receiver, Micah Parsons off the edge,, and Trevon Diggs as cornerback just to name a few. They also had Ezekiel Elliot at his best at running back and Defensive end DeMarcus Laurence. Owner, President, and General Manager Jerry Jones seems to have limitless pockets to acquire the people he wants.
With a record of 12-5 for the past three seasons and two NFC East Championships, the current record for the Dallas Cowboys of 4-7 seems shocking, with only 6 games left to play in the regular season. Right now, they are in third place in the NFC East Division. The Cowboys need a miracle for them to make it to the playoffs. Dak Prescott had signed a 4 year 240 million dollar contract, although he is currently out with a season-ending injury. Ceedee Lamb cost a pretty penny too with a 4 year 136 million dollar contract extension signed late in the summer, which led him to miss crucial time training with the team. Even bringing back Ezekiel Elliot could not stop the bleeding for the Cowboys. Injuries have plagued them this season, including for other superstar key players such as Zach Martin, Trevon Diggs, and Micah Parsons. The running back position has not been productive for the team, averaging 82 rushing yards per game, the second worst in the NFL. Additionally, the team did not fill all of its roster spots until late in the off-season or later yet into training camp. That leaves less time for coaching and training compared to other NFL teams. This is problematic for an organization like Dallas because Head Coach Mike McCarthy prefers working in a draft and developing type of program, training players early in the off-season.
Some sports commentators have ruled this team out for the rest of the season. Even the ever-positive owner Jerry Jones has an heir of acceptance that the season is now one to grow on rather than to finish in the playoffs. In the past few games, the defense has been holding its own, but the offense has had a string of missed opportunities, including multiple interceptions, and a forced fumble against Texans that seemed to end their season. Their string of closely spaced games between weeks 11 and 13 has not helped them much. They had a recent win against the Washington Commanders was impressive, breathing some much-needed life into their season. However, the Cowboys clearly are in need of change. Whether it’s firing someone and resetting their culture or attempting to make a trade, “America’s team” won’t be able to return to their previous glory until they accept they need a complete overhaul.
