A study from the Brookings Institution says, “automation and AI are expected to disproportionately impact jobs in transportation, manufacturing, and administrative support” (Muro et al). AI-powered customer service bots are also replacing human call center workers, answering customer questions more efficiently. One of the industries most affected by AI is transportation. Self-driving trucks and taxis could eventually replace human drivers. According to a report from the McKinsey Global Institute, “up to 30% of hours worked globally could be automated by 2030” (Manyika et al). In retail, AI-powered checkout machines and automated inventory systems mean fewer jobs for cashiers and stock clerks.
Even though AI makes jobs more efficient, it creates problems as well. People who lose their jobs to AI might struggle to find new work, especially if they don’t have skills in technology. The World Economic Forum predicts that “automation will displace 85 million jobs by 2025 but create 97 million new ones” (WEF). However, not everyone will have the chance to get the education or training needed for these new jobs, which could lead to more economic inequality. Nonetheless, jobs in AI maintenance, data science, and cybersecurity are in high demand. Governments and companies should invest in retraining programs to help workers move into new careers. Schools should also start teaching AI-related subjects so that students are ready for the future job market.
AI is definitely changing the way humans work, replacing some jobs while creating others. Although job loss is a real concern, investing in training programs and education can help people transition into new careers. Instead of fearing AI, society should find ways to use it for progress while making sure that workers are not left behind.
