To the great upset of many hopeful New York fans, the Jets have lost seven games in a row to begin the 2025 NFL season. This comes after many pundits were anticipating an improvement from the 5-12 record they finished the 2024 season with, considering their acquisition of 13 new players and their hiring of a new head coach. he team’s current losing streak is it’s longest since 2020.
The Jets’ extended losing streak has highlighted all of the team’s pressing deficiencies. ans of the team (along with team owner Woody Johnson) believe the team’s most significant problems are it’s lack of production from the quarterback position and the myriad of injuries amongst it’s players. Heading into Week |Eight, the Jets have 12 starting players out battling injuries, including superstar corner Sauce Gardener, a key to unlocking their defense A key player on the offensive side of the football that is battling an injury is Garrett Wilson, their best wide receiver from last season who has achieved 1,000 yard receiving seasons in each of his first three NFL seasons. ,
As previously stated, the Jets’ weak passing game, which has struggled all season, has been one of their biggest weaknesses. This horrendous play culminated in their Week Six game against the Denver Broncos, when the offense ended the loss with an embarrassing -10 passing yards, one of the worst passing games in NFL history. The problem runs deeper than one bad outing, despite newly hired head coach Aaron Glenn dismissing criticism about his play design.
Their efforts to turn this season around are obvious, as the Jets have made some surprising adjustments to their lineups and schemes in recent weeks. No moves were more dramatic than occured in Week Seven’s game against the Carolina Panthers, when the Jets made a switch to Tyrod Taylor, their veteran backup quarterback during halftime after Justin Fields, their starting quarterback, went just 6-12 while passing for only 46 yards. Despite Fields not throwing a single interception this year, the move was not surprising given his tendency to freeze up and hold onto the football for too long. This led him to being sacked a remarkable 22 times in just 6 games. Why was he benched? In an interview with The New York Post, Glenn stated the reason for benching Fields was that “the team needed a spark.” Under Fields, the Jets’ offense has managed just seven touchdowns over the past six games, none of which came in the first half, suggesting he has had ongoing struggles in the passing game.
Glenn’s unexpected quarterback switch showed poor results: Taylor threw completed 10 passes for 126 yards, but also threw two interceptions in the second half of the game alone.
Another surprising move from the Jets was their release of second-year defensive tackleLeonard Taylor III in mid-October. This move came despite the fact that he appeared in 14 games recording 24 tackles in his rookie season after making the team as an undrafted free agent last year.Taylor’s slip down the depth chart was likely was the cause of his release.
As of Week Eight, it’s been a different season, but the same sad story for the Jets. Despite their efforts to turn things around with roster changes, bold in-game decisions, and new coaching, the team continues to struggle with injuries, consistency, and an inefficient and weak offenseAs the season moves into its second half, pressure builds for the Jets to prove that their efforts to improve aren’t just talk. Unless something drastically changes soon, this could be yet another year Jets fans would rather forget.
