People get really upset about things they cannot do anything about. This happens all the time. When someone says something that upsets you or things do not go the way you thought they would, it can feel like your whole world is falling apart.
What if the real problem is not what is happening but how we deal with Stoicism?
Stoicism is a way of thinking that started over 2,000 years ago. Zeno of Citium started Stoicism. Then people like Epictetus, Seneca and Marcus Aurelius helped Stoicism grow. Stoicism is a philosophy, and the ideas of Stoicism still hold value in our lives today.
So one of the ideas of Stoicism is as follows: There are things we can control and things we cannot control. Epictetus thought we should only worry about what we can actually control, like what we think the decisions we make and how we react to things that happen. It is not worth getting upset about things we cannot change like people or big events.
This way of thinking of Stoicism really changes how we look at problems. Instead of asking, “Why did this happen to me?” someone who follows Stoicism would probably ask themselves “What is the best way for me to react to this situation?” It is not really about the event itself. How we feel about what happened. Stoicism is really about how we choose to respond to what happens around us and Stoicism.
The people who believe in Stoicism also thought that what makes us suffer is not the events themselves but how we see things. Like Epictetus said, what bothers us is not what happens but how we think about it. Two people can experience the same thing but how they respond to it can be totally different. It is not about what’s happening, it is how they think about it. That is what Stoicism is about.
Stoicism also tells us that we should accept things. Stoicism is not about giving up or just letting things happen. It means realizing that some things are out of our hands and there is no point in stressing over what we cannot change. People sometimes call this idea accepting fate or “amor fati”. Stoicism teaches us to work with reality of fighting against it and Stoicism.
At the time Stoicism emphasizes self-control. It helps people learn to manage their feelings, think clearly, and act with intention. We do not want to get rid of emotions just not let them take over. Stoicism then is really about learning to control ourselves not about controlling the world around us and Stoicism.
This brings up a question. If everything is already decided does that mean we do not actually have a choice? Some people think that if fate is real then we do not really have will. Stoicism has a point of view. No matter what happens we can always choose how we react to it. That means our freedom comes from the choices we make not from what happens to us and Stoicism.
This is what makes Stoicism such a powerful idea. It gives individuals control. Sometimes things just. We cannot really do anything about them. Being able to decide how we think and act is what Stoicism is all about and that is Stoicism.
So if you think about it like this Stoicism is not really a philosophy. It is like a way of thinking that you can actually use in your life. When you are dealing with stress when things do not go as planned or when you are unsure about what’s going to happen next the same idea applies. Focus on what you can control and let go of what you cannot.
In a world where people constantly react to everything, around them Stoicism offers an approach. Of trying to control what happens around us maybe we should focus on controlling ourselves. That can be more powerful than it seems. That is the idea of Stoicism.
